NPEF’s Second Annual Strides4Students 5K Raises Funds for New Providence Schools October 12, 2015 6:19 pm By MARIANNE IVERS October 11, 2015 at 12:50 PM NEW PROVIDENCE, NJ – The second annual Strides4Students took place on Sunday, Oct. 11 on a crisp and clear fall day. The fundraising event, which includes a 5K run/walk and 1 mile fun run, is organized by the New Providence Education Foundation. Approximately 150 runners and some walkers participated in the race. The first two runners to cross the finish line were Hope Tiboni and Joseph Vaszily with running times of 18:50 and 18:58, respectively. Approximately 75 children took part in the fun run that included three different races for age groups 3-5, 5-7 and 8-10. Alma DeMetropolis, who chaired the event, told the TAPinto New Providence that the Education Foundation has been in existence for 11 years. According to Hugo Barth, President of the Education Foundation, the organization raised a total of $63,000 for educational programs last year. In addition to Strides4Students the Foundation organizes other fundraising events throughout the year. “Touchdown for Education” takes place in January and “March Mayhem” in March. Vice-President of the Foundation Jama Vitale, expressed her gratitude for the corporate sponsors and especially the multiple local businesses who continue to support the organization regardless of the economic climate. Mayor Al Morgan did not participate in the run but was there to cheer on the runners. New Providence is a small town and “we all support each other,” Morgan said. For this race the borough Police Department marked the roads and both the Fire Department and EMS were attending the event. “We are all one big family,” Morgan said.
