Linking Math & Literature
For the past several years, the New Providence School District has used the University of Chicago ‘Everyday Mathematics’ project to promote a meaningful mathematical experience for all students as they acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to succeed in the 21st century society. The program combines real-life problem solving, multiple methods of instruction, and appropriate use of technology.
Additionally, the program offers teachers the opportunity to link mathematical concepts with literature by offering a complete bibliography of trade books that coincide with lessons in each unit of study. The NPEF grant helped fund the purchase of these books so students benefited from viewing math in everyday situations and in the books that they read.
